Tutorial - Working with IRIS Explorer
Presenter:Dr. Jeremy Walton,
NAG Ltd
Abstract
IRIS Explorer is a visualisation toolkit originally developed by SGI for
their workstations, and which is now developed and distributed by NAG on
a variety of platforms, including:
-
SGI IRIX
- Sun Solaris
- IBM RS/6000 AIX
- HP 9000 HP/UX
- DEC Alpha Unix
- Cray UNICOS
- DEC Alpha NT
- Intel NT
Working with IRIS Explorer, the user interactively creates an
application by connecting modules together using a point-and-click
interface. The application can be distributed across a heterogeneous
network, and its interface can be easily customised before being passed
to an end-user. The user can extend the functionality of IRIS Explorer
by creating new modules using bundled development tools.
This course provides a brief hands-on introduction to IRIS Explorer, and
shows how to create applications from the modules that are distributed
with the system. A variety of application areas - including image
processing, flow field visualisation, molecular graphics, finite element
display and other scientific visualisation examples - are illustrated.
Editing applications and customising their interface is also described
in some detail. Finally, the extension of the toolkit through the
development of new modules is discussed, with a description of the
module development tools that are bundled with IRIS Explorer.
